Day Trip: The Dolomites

We consider ourselves fortunate people here in Verona. We live in one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Italy, but we’re also so close to the most beautiful natural settings. We have thought that we’d share a little bit of our local knowledge with you and today, we bring you a day trip proposal if you want to change the busy city streets for a more relaxed spot. The place to go is the Dolomites.

North from the Veneto region, mostly in Belluno but expanding to other provinces, the Dolomites are a part of the eastern Alps. Magical little villages and breath-taking landscapes will bring you here, but you’ll want to come back for the many activities and resources it offers:

1. Natural parks. Make sure you visit at least one of the ten natural parks that comprise the Dolomites. The Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunese is the closest to Verona and one of the most beautiful.

2. Lakes. At the feet of Monte Civetta, the Lago di Àlleghe mirrors the spectacular peak and serves as a perfect spot for a picnic in warm weather. If you’re going by car, don’t miss the other lakes—some of them even allow water sports in the summer!

3. Sports. From skiing and snowboarding in the winter, to hiking, climbing or mountain-biking in the summer, the Dolomites provide an excellent landscape for sports. Make the most out of your day and go early in the morning to catch the best offers.

4. Food and wine. There are many villages stuffed between the peaks and rocks at the Dolomites. Falcade is one of them and seven restaurants in town are celebrating typical local food by offering special menus to couples. Meat and wild fruits, cheese from the Alps and fantastic wines—you’ll want to try it all!
