Hostaria: Food & Wine Experience

If we’re proud of something in Italy, it’s our food and wine—specially this time of year, when we are in the middle of vendemmia, the grape harvest. This weekend in Verona, we’re celebrating both in Hostaria, a wine festival and gourmet experience for the most demanding palates.

This weekend, from the 16th through the 18th, more than 80 wineries will be in charge of delighting your taste buds. You will be able to try more than 300 wines from all over the Veneto region: from Valpolicellas to Soaves. Along a path winding through the town’s historic downtown, you can become active protagonists of the festival by deciding to “follow the path” and taste the wines offered by participating wine cellars.

To go with them, make sure you try the food from the stands that will be offering risotto all’isolana, tortellini di Valeggio, typical Italian polentine and other artisan pasta. The foodie paradise will be completed by several activities taking place at the venue. Poets, art exhibitions, painters, musicians… will all perform at Hostaria. Oh! And if you’re visiting Verona with the kids, the event also has activities planned for them!

After a long day of Veronese food and wine, get a good night sleep at Palazzo Victoria!

Day Trip: Villa Dionisi

One of the many wonders of Verona is the variety of landscapes it offers. Whether you’re a mountain person, a sea lover or you’re the urban type, you will never be bored in this town. Now that autumn is coming, you might be in the mood for some quiet countryside retreat to rest from the hectic city life. Our getaway suggestion for the weekend is one of the most beautiful villas in the region: Villa Dionisi.

Just a 20 minute drive from Verona, Villa Dionisi is surrounded by stunning gardens and nature. It is a typical Venetian villa from the 18th century, which belonged to the Dionisi family. The Dionisis were rich nobles who decided to exploit the cultivation of rice and built their family mansion in Cerea to have a tighter control over the lands. The result was a magnificent villa, turned into a museum, in which you will have the opportunity to witness wonderful frescoes and tapestries. You will be amazed at the paintings by Veronese artist Giuseppe Montanari and decorator Nicola Marcola. The alcove in particular is an astonishing example of interior design. Also make sure you don’t miss the library and the portico!

You can visit Villa Dionisi for free every Friday, from 9am to 12pm. After getting all the fresh air you need, come back to the heart of Verona at Palazzo Victoria!

Child’s Play: Tocatì International Festival

Do you have fond memories of your childhood? We do. Sometimes we even miss being kids and playing around all day. There are still opportunities to pamper our inner child though. Some indulge in candy, cartoons and their mother’s home-made food. But events like the one happening in Verona next weekend will certainly make your 10-year-old inner self rub its hands with excitement!

The city will come alive from September 17 to 20 with the Tocatì, the International Festival of Street Games. For four days, participants will be able to experience the game culture. You won’t have time to be bored: Tocatì has something for everyone. Take a look at the dance and musical performances, the best street cuisine in town, conferences, exhibitions, and cinema and theatre mini-experiences. However, the biggest attractions will be the 30 traditional games that will be played in the street. And if you’re feeling playful, you’ll also be able to take part completely for free!

The guest this year is Catalunya, which will bring its famous castells to the party. The castells are tall human towers that Catalunyans build for their traditional festivities—an exciting and risky show that you’ll surely enjoy! After a day of playing around, make sure to come home safe to Palazzo Victoria and sleep like a child.

3 fun facts about ‘Romeo and Juliet’ you probably didn’t know

We all know the story: young man and young lady fall in love in the magical city of Verona, rival families, impossible relationship, tragic ending. However, Romeo and Juliet is still one of the most studied and performed plays to this day. And although very little remains unexplored about the story, the characters or Shakespeare himself, there are still some mysteries to unveil.

Here are 3 fun facts about Romeo and Juliet that you probably didn’t know:

1. Shakespeare never visited Verona. Even though Romeo and Juliet meet, fall in love and die in the city, the English playwright never put a foot on the Veneto region. We have to thank him for becoming the universal city of love.

2. Juliet’s house in Verona is filled with love notes from tourists. The number of love notes that visitors leave on every corner of the house is so big, that the authorities need to clean it up. They usually do it twice a year: on Valentine’s Day and on September 17, Juliet’s birthday. There is also a message wall, where visitors can scribble their love wishes—just like the one we have at Palazzo Victoria!

 3. The famous balcony doesn’t appear in Shakespeare’s play. In the 16th Century, the theatrical scenery was so poor that the location was described by actors, and a balcony would’ve been very difficult to represent. Nevertheless, subsequent stagings of the play did include the balcony and made it so famous, that it had to be added to Juliet’s house in Verona at the beginning of the 20th Century.
